Ella Fitzgerald: First Lady of Jazz who received a Grammy award in 1980 at the age of 62, had long been one of the most popular vocalist in Jazz. While some listeners regretted the considerable refinement of her vocal technique, which could never match the raw emotional resonances of an artist such as Billie Holiday, many found that Fitzgerald’s comforting sense of self assurance and vocal agility combined to produce one of the most infectiously spirited sounds in all Jazz. Perhaps the finest SCAT singer of all time, Fitzgerald delighted audiences with her textless improvisations on numbers such as Gershwin’s “Lady Be Good”

Art Pepper’s autobiography, Straight Life (transcribed by his third wife Laurie Pepper), discusses the jazz music world, as well as drug and criminal subcultures of mid-20th century California.

In the early 1980s, a commercial form of jazz fusion called pop fusion or "smooth jazz" became successful and garnered significant radio airplay. Smooth jazz saxophonists include Grover Washington, Jr., Kenny G, Kirk Whalum, Boney James, and David Sanborn and vocalist such as Al Jarreau, Anita Baker, Chaka Khan, and Sade.
