The 2013 Kyoto Prize for music goes to seminal pianist Cecil Taylor. The award to Cecil Taylor reads: "An Innovative Jazz Musician Who Has Fully Explored the Possibilities of Piano Improvisation"

It is the first time that an afro-american jazz and improvising musician enters the list of the great musical figures who have been the previous nominees of this prestigious prize:
1985: Olivier Messiaen (France, 1908–1992)
1989: John Cage (U.S., 1912–1992)
1993: Witold Lutosławski (Poland, 1913–1994)
1997: Iannis Xenakis (France, 1922–2001)
2001: György Ligeti (Austria, 1923–2006)
2005: Nikolaus Harnoncourt (Austria, born 1929)
2009: Pierre Boulez (France, born 1925)

Greek Jazz saxophonist Dimos Dimitriadis director of the renowned Ionian University Jazz Program and newly re-elected secretary of the International Association of Schools of Jazz (IASJ) was selected to participate in the process as one of the nominators. The awarding ceremony for Cecil Taylor will be held in Kyoto on November 10th and Dimos Dimitriadis is among the invited guests.
