The title of the film was taken from a Maya Angelou quote.
Nina Simone documentary, What Happened, Miss Simone? was nominated for Best Documentary at the recent Academy Awards. It lost to Amy, the Amy Winehouse documentary.
What Happened, Miss Simone? was executive produced by Simone’s daughter, Lisa Simone Kelly.
