Jazz Big Day: Concerts, workshops, happenings and a shop selling records, books and memorabilia – Vass.Sophias & Kokkali, Athens -210 7282333 – GROUP BOOKINGS 210 7282367 –

Once again the Concert Hall is opening its doors to the world of jazz, following up on the major success of the tribute to Latin jazz staged in 2010. This year’s event will be showcasing Greek music, with a programme featuring some of the most important figures from all the various eras and movements. There will also be eminent musicians from other countries; including famous American pianist Kenny Barron and trailblazing Israeli saxophonist Gilad Atzmon. For a whole day the Concert Hall will echo to the thrilling sounds of jazz music!

– Banqueting Hall – A journey through the world of jazz — An interactive musical presentation of the history of jazz from the beginning to the end of the twentieth century – 8 people on stage : storytellers – musicians & dancers for an 80 minutes show for adults and children. 18:00 Dimos Dimitriadis Quintet
– Dimitris Mitropoulos Hall
Dimitriadis is regarded as a key figure in musical education in Greece. He is the founder of the unique and highly successful Jazz Studies Program at the Ionian University in Corfu, where he holds the position of Associate Professor of Saxophone and Head of Jazz Studies, the first academic position given to a jazz musician in this country.His international training and strong performance skills, have brought him to record and perform next to some of the leading jazz musicians

Oud player Alekos Vretos knows jazz and this time around he will be presenting a concoction of Arabic, jazz and Latin music along with a hefty helping of improvisation. While his quartet works a tight show, Vretos allows his fellow artists to let their creativity shine through. The result is an explosive, interactive atmosphere which echoes his belief that there is an innate human need for music.The show will feature compositions from Vretos’ new CD Mergin as well as works by other composers of jazz and Arabic music, including Wayne Shorter, Ara Dinkjian and Anouar Brahem, among others. Kenny Barron is consequently considered one of the most important and influential mainstream jazz pianists since the BeBop era. Kenny Barron’s unmatched ability to mesmerize audiences with his elegant playing, sensitive melodies and infectious rhythms is what inspired the Los Angeles Times to name him “one of the top jazz pianists in the world” and Jazz Weekly to call him “The most lyrical piano player of our time.”
