« Trails » is Antoine Karacostas debut album as a leader. Accompanied by Simon Bernier on drums and Anders Ulrich on double bass since the beginning of the band in 2014, he took time to let their repertoire mature in order to offer with this disc a musical and human cohesion. Inviting Cybèle Castoriadis and Pierre Bernier on three tracks, the band offers a singular jazz with a heady lyricism, subtly mixing influences of modern jazz of New-York and Middle-East with these of greek traditional music. First, as its title is suggesting, this record is an exploration of Antoine Karacostas greek origins. It unwinds this Ariadne’s thread, blending the pianist’s compositions with arrangements of rebetiko and music from Smyrna – from where his family comes – and with the sophisticated compositions of Manos Hadjidakis, Vassilis Tsitsanis and the more contemporary Vassilis Tzortzinis.
