In early times, Roney took lessons from Clark Terry and Dizzy Gillespie and studied with Miles Davis from 1985 until the latter's death in 1991. Wallace credits Davis as having helped to challenge and shape his creative approach to life as well as being his music instructor, mentor, and friend; he was the only trumpet player Davis personally mentored.

His consummate artistry and eagerness to explore and transcend musical boundaries has led him to collaborate with diverse musicians such as Art Blakey, Herbie Hancock, Miles Davis, Carole King, Ornette Coleman, Sonny Rollins, Prince, Stevie Wonder, Joni Mitchell among others. He is one of the few musicians in his generation who learned and perfected his craft directly from Jazz Masters. He is continuing his push to develop new concepts in jazz and is considered one of the leaders in the future movement of jazz music.
