Expect music-making that, in DeJohnette’s words, is “open, prepared for the unexpected, and willing to follow that where it takes us.”
“After having drummed with Keith Jarrett, Miles Davis and everyone else who matters in jazz, Jack DeJohnette, 70, takes his place as a revered grand master.” The Times (London)
“Spalding has made her mark not just as a virtuoso jazz bassist or an effortlessly nimble singer but as an exotic hybrid of the two. ” — The New York Times
“After 30 albums as a leader and at least 25 years in the spotlight, it’s clear Joe Lovano is more than a dominant figure in jazz. ” — Wall Street Journal
“…one of the best ever to touch a kit. ” — Boston Globe on Jack DeJohnette
Jack DeJohnette
In a career that spans five decades and includes collaborations with some of the most iconic figures in modern jazz, NEA Jazz Master and Grammy winner Jack DeJohnette has established an unchallenged reputation as one of the greatest drummers in the history of the genre.
‘DeJohnette could turn matchsticks into an orchestra. He is a craftsman, carving, pushing, painting, adding layers, dissolving layers. Playing rims, mallets, skin on skin. The trio played as a true collaboration. No star turns, just discovery and nuance as only masters can pull off’ (Eye on Music)
Joe Lovano
Hailed by the New York Times as ‘one of the greatest musicians in jazz history’, Grammy award-winning saxophone giant Joe Lovano has distinguished himself for some three decades as a prescient and path finding force in the arena of creative music. He has earned praise not just for his compelling saxophone tone and improvisational ability, but also for his forward-thinking presentation of new musical ideas and ensemble concepts.
Esperanza Spalding
Since her early years to her current success as a creative musician, Esperanza Spalding has charted her own course. The young bassist/vocalist/composer was one of the biggest breakout stars of 2011, garnering a Grammy for Best New Artist. This is unprecedented by a jazz musician, and Spalding continues to make the unprecedented her norm. Spalding always strives to innovate her music, and has already reached numerous developments in her professional career. She presented the various sides of her writing on Esperanza, her 2008 international debut recording, quickly topping Billboard’s Contemporary Jazz Chart and becoming that year’s best selling jazz album worldwide. Chamber Music Society in 2010 was another instant chart topper and gained multiple awards, earning her Grammy for Best New Artist in 2011. Maintaining her lifelong passion for new sounds and uncharted territory, the versatile Spalding has collaborated with musicians and artists from different styles and genres, including Wayne Shorter, Prince, Herbie Hancock, Corinne Bailey Mae, Bruno Mars, and Janelle Monáe.
Leo Genovese
The all star frontline is rounded out by the amazing Argentinean pianist Leo Genovese a long-time collaborative partner of Spalding’s, who has traveled the globe on her Chamber Music Society and Radio Music Society tours.
‘There’s nothing old school about Genovese’s approach. In fact, on macro and micro levels he actively resists conformity… but somehow, he always fits without having to fit in.’ (All About Jazz)
