Jay Clayton: A pioneer of jazz, in voice improvisation and music education, member of Vocal Summit with Bobby McFerrin and the ensemble of Steve Reich! –

Jay Clayton is an internationally acclaimed vocalist, composer, and educator, whose work boldly spans the terrain between jazz and new music. Jay has gained worldwide attention as both performer and teacher. With more than 40 recordings to her credit, Clayton has appeared alongside such formidable artists as Muhal Richard Abrams, Steve Reich, Kirk Nurock, Julian Priester, Jerry Granelli, Jane Ira Bloom, Gary Bartz, Jack Wilkins, George Cables, Fred Hersch, Gary Thomas, tap dancer Brenda Bufalino as well as fellow vocalists Jeanne Lee, Norma Winstone, Urszula Dudziak and Bobby McFerrin.

She has taught extensively throughout the world and was on the jazz faculty of Cornish College of the Arts for 20 years, and on the jazz faculty at Peabody Institute in Baltimore for 10 years. Her book, Sing Your Story: A Practical Guide for Learning and Teaching the Art of Jazz Singing, was published by Advance Music in 2001.

Part One: Singing the Jazz Standards for Beginner to Intermediate Level
Students will learn more about the “jazz language” and the fundamentals of singing jazz music. This will include learning how to count off tempos for the band, change meters, leading the other band members, planning repertoire.

Part Two: Vocal Improvisation for Intermediate to Advanced Level
A Practice approach improvising over chord changes. Students will learn the melodies to Major and Minor Blues and Autumn Leaves.

Part Three: FREE SING for Intermediate to Advanced Level
Students will be exploring and developing their own personal soloing vocabulary through free improvisation exercises and working with Jay’s original free compositions as well as the Vocal Summit repertoire.
