Probably no drummer besides Buddy Rich turned pro as young as Terri Lyne Carrington. Today she is a full-time Berklee professor, but her career began in 1972 when she was just seven years old. She was mentored by Jack DeJohnette and the legendary Alan Dawson, and played with some of jazz’s biggest names. She will be at Sani Festival this July. She answers few questions for Jazzonline.
Kenny Barron has played next to some Jazz legend such as Ella Fitzgerald, Dizzy Gillespie, Elvin Jones, Ron Carter among others and he has been nominated nine times for Grammy Awards and for the American Jazz Hall of Fame. He was elected a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2009. For over 25 years, Barron taught piano and keyboard harmony at Rutgers University in New Jersey. He now teaches at the Juilliard School of Music. His piano students have included Earl MacDonald, Harry Pickens, and Aaron Parks.
Dimitriadis is regarded as a key figure in musical education in Greece. He is the founder of the unique and highly successful Jazz Studies Program at the Ionian University in Corfu, where he holds the position of Associate Professor of Saxophone and Head of Jazz Studies, the first academic position given to a jazz musician in this country. His international training and strong performance skills, have brought him to record and perform next to some of the leading jazz musicians such as Tim Hagans, Adam Nussbaum, Chico Freeman, Ron McClure, Sheila Jordan, Mark Murphy, Keith Copeland, Armen Donelian, JD Walter, Jonathan Kreisberg, Andy Middleton, Chico Freeman and many others. The Wonderfall Quartet debut album released in 2011 was a real success. Being mostly influenced by the exquisite sound and atmosphere of ECM recordings and the powerful lyricism of their favorite Esbjorn Svensson Trio (e.s.t.), their were bound to shape up their own unique sound and playing… Four talented young jazz musicians very active and devoted to what they do release now their second album. Jack Dejohnette is one of the leading exponents of the jazz drum-set, a member of the Roy Haynes/ Elvin Jones/ Tony Williams school which dominated the postbop era. One of the most influential jazz drummers of the 20th century, given his extensive work as leader and sideman for musicians including john Coltrane, Freddie Hubbard, Keith Jarrett, Sonny Rollins, Miles Davis, Joe Henderson, and John Scofield.
