The fourth edition of Jazz In Paros Festival this year. What would you like to say about it ?
MB – The next edition of JIP 2014 will showcase the voice with the presence of three great singers: Heleen Schuttevaer (from Netherlands), Anna Lauvergnac (from Italy) and Chloe Cailleton (from France). Heleen is a singer who loves to swing, Anna loves to sing intense ballads, Chloe sings classics of Brazilian popular music. Heleen and Chloe will sing on the same night on July 21 in Marpissa, on a small plaza in front of a wonderful church. It will be actually Chloe’s birthday this night. Anna and her 4tet featuring Vasilis Gouzios on tenor sax, Stephane Tsapis on piano, Joe Quitzke on drums, will perform on July 24 in Lefkes amphitheater. The first part of the concert will feature Poetry and Jazz where two poets, Christos Georgousis from Paros and Jean-Philippe Carlot from Paris will recitate their own choice of poetry in their own way, in a combination with improvised music. Paros was the land of the great poet Archilohos, we have to perpetrate the spirit of this icon of the Greek poetry. Dimitra Marangozis, from Toronto, will say the poems in Greek and English so everyone understands.
A special Paris Paros Project will happen at Paros Park on July 23: the group Electric Sounds will play for the first time in Greece. Electric Sounds is a mix between jazz, rock and electro. We are five musicians, Greek and French: Andreas Polyzogopoulos on trumpet, Marc-Antoine Perrio on guitar, Stephane Tsapis on keyboard, Arnaud Biscay on drums and myself on electric bass.
And of course we have the now famous jam-sessions “Around the Pool” at hotel Albatross in Logaras on July 19, 20 and 22, at 9:30pm.
To end the Paros Jazz Academy during the same week of the festival, the students’concert will be held in Piso Livadi on the terrace of Brazil Bar on July 25. More than 30 musicians will be playing there !
The last night of the festival is on July 27 in one of the best restaurants of Paros, right on the beach of Piso Aliki: Thalassamou. Heleen Schuttevaer and Chloe Cailleton will be singing again in a less formal, more club atmosphere, with guests like Vasilis Gouzios on tenor sax and Michael Felberbaum on guitar.
How this project was born ?
MB – Athena Perantinou from Piso Livadi asked me during the spring of 2011 to organize the artistic aspect of the first edition of Paros Jazz Academy 2011.Bringing great jazz teachers to Paros like the singer Sara Lazarus, saxophonist Alexandra Grimal, harpist Isabelle Olivier, pianist Vincent Bourgeyx, drummer Joe Quitzke, was a wonderful opportunity to play some concerts during the Academy: the festival was born!
What were your expectations ?
MB – Paros is full of ideal spots to play outside concerts in summer: Paros Park of course, but
also small villages like Marpissa, Lefkes, Piso Livadi, Logaras, Piso Aliki etc… These places offer beautiful and natural concert venues. The idea is to bring music to the habitants and visitors of Paros : this is what we did and still do.
How do you see this festival growing ?
MB – I am from Paris and I find in Paros everything I can’t find in Paris: the sea, the blue sky, the beautiful weather, the amazing food, the quietness, the kindness and welcome of Parian people. But there are a lot of common points between Paris and Paros: history, culture, esthetisme, quality of life. Paros is very inspiring to artists as Paris can be. Habitants and visitors of Paros are very sensitive to these aspects that Paros offers. I hope that the festival will grow year after year with more and more spectators in a goal of high musical quality. Paros deserves the best.
